Who? Why? What?

My name is Steven van Ostaayen. I am currently 32 years old and I live in the South of the Netherlands. I have created this weblog as a valve for my personal ponderings, interests and frustrations which I can’t release at other platforms. These are the second innings, following a first attempt in 2007. In that time I initialized http://stevenvanostaayen.wordpress.com, intended to extend on my Curriculum Vitae. Not long afterwards, my life took an unanticipated turn, which forced me to trail along a predetermined path. At the end of this phase, I stumbled upon an interesting job (online marketing) and established a certain continuity in life. This was until I recently decided to radically alter my course of life. This overhaul, puts me back on track with my original aspirations. So, in order to complete the circle, I will continue my personal blog, boldened with experience and an updated game plan.

Dang it, have I lost my password and my original address of registration is no more. Therefore a new stevenvanostaayen.freeblogservice.com was needed.

Online Publishing

Recently I substantiated Nexilim, an online publisher. Nexilim should give birth to concepts which are driven by strong principles and an urgency to contribute to society. Selfdestination.com reflects on a personal and soci(et)al level, providing leverage to ‘align your reality to your desires’. And Demonetized.com scrutinises the state of economy, its players and mechanisms in order to unravel the obscurity and pierce through the insanity. In short, Selfdestination strives to give people control over their personal life, while Demonetized.com strives to maximise peoples’ control over capital. Strong words need to be backed by deeds, however the road to development is filled with hurdles. Alas, this is not about Nexilim or its current titles, this is about what I cannot fit along the editorial ruler. Yet.

Political Scope

Although I can use mentioned outlets to communicate a lot of what makes me tick, some key interests remain uncovered. Politics is one. Or more specifically, the body of governance and its public duties and accountabilities. I severely disgust partisan politics and the political smoke and mirrors that are intended to confuse the masses. My political rants will mostly address Dutch politics and the fallacy of the European Empire. In the future, a political platform needs to be amended to Nexilim which discusses Governance Inc.

Economy the Dragon

I personally believe our economy is a fraud and our financial system is geared for asymmetric distribution and capital destruction. I think (more) ordinary people should grow their capital like the wealthiest have grown their riches; intelligent investing. So while I say that the financial markets are evil, I even so propose to embrace the devil. The road to investing is treacherous, the markets are rigged, risks can evaporate your wealth in a blitz and portfolio management requires extensive homework and disciplined methodologies. Even worse, trading is the fire that makes all hell burn. In reality, investing is as diverse as things you can buy and can be managed as granular as multiple lifespans up to a microsecond.

Investment for the Masses

I truly believe that investing can be done by a substantial part of society, ranging from very safe to risk-on speculation. Yes, I dare to say a ‘safe’ investment opportunities exists, accessible to everyone.
My advice to the trustee couldn't be more simple: Put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S & P 500 index fund. (I suggest Vanguard's.) I believe the trust's long-term results from this policy will be superior to those attained by most investors — whether pension funds, institutions or individuals — who employ high-fee managers.
- Warren Buffet's investment advice to his heirs

On the record, I should discourage investing and especially (high-levered) trading because of the risks involved. Off the record, I think that long-term savings at the bank are a guaranteed loss of capital (in contrast to a chance of gains). If you are wealthy and are willing to invest your time, a proper asset class to meet your needs can be found surely. Demonetized.com isn’t the place for trading and investing advice, it deals with economy on another meta-level. In the future, I hope that such a platform can become liaison to Demonetized under the theme ‘control your capital’. Until this time hits, this, and possibly external platforms will be my launchpad to communicate about trading and investing.

Unleash Information Technology

Next to a love-hate relationship with the economy, I have also developed an equally diabolic bond with Information Technology. The memory of my early Commodore 64, NES, PC or the Dial-up Modem makes me all giggly-and-nostalgic. However it frustrates my how this technology has overtaken life and behaviour, while it disconnects us (from true nature). Yet I am convinced that technology sets us free. I will touch upon IT’s (and greater technologies’) impact upon us and society on Selfdestination. This channel is intended to release the nerd in me. I need my personal technologies to adapt to me and to perform at modus optimus. So on this channel I will exhaust the more applied side of Information Technologies and I will share thoughts that can help you take control over your technologies.

Unstructured Chaos

Are these all primary themes? Probably not. So I guess this platform will initially be a heap of unsorted data. But after distance passes we may find patterns in all chaos.

Social media will be the new thing, I have heard. I don’t know Twitter, Facebook or Google Plus, but I have heard of Hyves. Last time I checked they were on a path to global domination...
In other words, I am not the active social media kind of guy. But I will be in the future, so is my resolution. Let’s see if I can correctly stratify my communications over a wide array of channels, without losing my sanity.

Eductional Background

After primary education, I followed secondary education with a scientific profile. I had a specific interest in biology, physics and chemistry. Afterwards I studied Information Science followed by Electrical Engineering, both which I suspended within the initial year. Although I had a certain affinity with the matter, I didn't see my fulltime future in the respective fields. I say this with great respect to brother and sisters electrical engineers, technicians and software engineers who play a pivotal role in present world. This led me to Media & Entertainment Management, as the perfect mix of production, marketing and event management. During this study I specialised as marketer.

So this is why and who.

I invite you back next time, to peak within the cracks of my mind.
